When a sawmill went up on the shore of Skidegate Inlet in 1908, a town grew up around it — and in 1910 a hotel was built to house the workers who kept arriving. It was named the Premier Hotel, after the small creek that still runs along one side of the property. More than a century later, that hotel is still standing, and still open, in the middle of a village that has since taken back its name: Daajing Giids.
Most rooms look out over the water and the working dock, where fishing boats slip out each morning for the west coast of the islands. It is an unfussy, well-worn, genuinely historic place to stay — and a five-minute walk from just about everything in town.
